PARTNERSHIP AND THE INTERNATIONAL CONFEDERATION OF MIDWIVES

Statement of belief

The establishment of relationships/partnerships is beneficial to ICM, making it more effective by extending its influence beyond the midwifery profession and in the achievement of its aims and goals.

Policy

As the demands on ICM grow and the organisation’s goals also demand much of it at all levels – Country, Regional, and International, so the Confederation will develop partnerships with additional organisations which can benefit the Confederation by bringing it into contact with a wider spectrum of organisations than formally envisaged.  The basis for such partnerships should be:

·       The prospective partner’s activities are not in conflict with the aims and objectives of the Confederation

·       Each has the ability to work independently

·       Each has complementary skills

·       There is mutual trust, respect, and support of the other

·       There is communication

·       Each gains rewards in proportion to its contribution

For ICM, the list of potential partners is quite large, but it should not be our intention to enter into partnerships which cannot receive the attention required to make sure they are managed and flourish.

Potential partners for ICM could come from:

·       Agencies of the United Nations/WHO

·       International Nongovernmental Organisations for

·       Women’s reproductive health

·       Paediatric/child welfare

·       Human rights

·       Health care professions

·       Regional organisations

·       ELSACON (East Central and Southern College of Nursing)

·       International organisations representing commercial groups

·       Federation International Pharmaceutique

·       Commercial enterprises

·       Family planning products

·       Health care products

·       Products used in maternity care

·       Publishers

Partnership may also be formed for a specific initiative:

·       A research project

·       A development project associated with achieving Safe Motherhood

As partners are confirmed and agreed, it is the responsibility of the Secretary General to maintain a file that clearly identifies the status of the partnership.

Guiding Statement for Member Associations

Member Associations are urged to inform Headquarters of any international organisations that may be worthy of consideration as a partner in order to fulfil the goals of the Confederation’s global strategy.
