Save the Children Award for Midwives

TERMS OF REFERENCE FOR THE AWARD.


Purpose:
To bestow an award to midwives who have demonstrated their achievement to act as change agents in improving newborn health at the community level through training and/or provision of services in Sub-Saharan Africa or Asia.

Awarded: 2002.
One or two awards to midwives qualified in newborn care.
Announced at the International Council meeting in 2002.
The amount to be awarded: 1000 US$ in recognition of achieved accomplishments in newborn care.
Travel, accommodation, meals and the Congress registration fee for the 26th Triennial Congress for Midwives are included in the award.

Submission date: February 28th 2002.

Selection process:
There will be a call for nominations from member associations. A selection will be made from amongst the nominees by the Selection Committee.

Selection criteria:
Awards will be selected based on their effectiveness in the community, their sustainability and their acceptability in the community.

Selection Committee:
The Board of Management of the International Confederation of Midwives, together with a representative of Save the Children USA.

Award process
Announcement is made in the 2002 Council meeting. The award ceremony will take place during the Opening Ceremony of the 26th Triennial Congress for Midwives in Vienna, Austria, April 14th 2002.
Award events will be covered in the ICM journal International Midwifery and forwarded to all ICM partners, midwifery journals and other appropriate media.

Report:
A report of knowledge pertaining to newborn care gained from attending the 26th Triennial Congress will be expected within six months of the receipt of the award.
