GLOBAL STRATEGY 1999 - 2002

 

 

GOAL1:           To work towards achievement of the Safe-Motherhood goals.

To regularly disseminate to member associations up-dates on progress of Safe-Motherhood Initiative.

 

Forward to (or have put on mailing lists) member associations copies of WHO Safe-Motherhood Newsletter and other regularly published periodicals on this issue.

 

 

Member associations and midwives kept informed.

 

Disseminate outcomes of joint ICM/ WHO/ UNICEF Workshops.

 

Member associations, Regional Representatives initiate follow up activities resulting from 1987, 1991, 1993 and 1996 Pre-congress workshops and mid-triennium workshops/symposia.

 

 

Action plans from Pre-congress workshops applied at local and regional level to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity.

 

Plan and implement ongoing collaborative activities with similarly committed international organisations.

 

Select sites, funding and establish collaborative team to plan 1999 Pre-congress workshop (HQ) and others where no ICM membership.

 

Ongoing development and strengthening of midwifery services responsive to shortfalls identified as contributing to maternal mortality rates in countries where rates are high.

 


 

 

GOAL 2:          To demonstrate the potential of midwifery actions to reduce maternal and perinatal mortality and morbidity rates

Establish direct correlation between provision of midwifery care and improvements in maternal and newborn outcomes.

GOAL 4:          To work with communities and women’s groups to develop their knowledge and awareness of how to attain health

To ensure national health departments have made available to them copy of International Definition of the Midwife.

 

Member associations reinforce with governments and health departments definition of a midwife as distributed from ICM HQ.

 

 

Better informed decision-makers in government health departments.

 

To preserve the integrity of the title midwife.

 

Determine what other descriptives are attached to title by region and the role and function of each worker.

 

Ability to better debate and contribute to international data bases on provision of trained/qualified maternity service personnel.

 

 

To establish if historical development of personnel within maternity services has relevance in provision of care to women today.

 

Obtain by region better knowledge of why it is so, that other personnel have varying supplementary descriptive titles added to the word midwife.

GOAL 9:     To secure the financial viability of ICM.

GOAL 12:        The development of national codes of ethics based on the International Code of Ethics for Midwives.

The development of national codes of ethics for midwives in all countries where ICM has membership.

 

Dissemination of introductory booklet from HQ with International Code of Ethics.
