International Midwifery (IM)

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2003 - VOLUME 16, NUMBER 1

The journal of the International Confederation of Midwives

In the current issue of IM you'll find:

Petra ten Hoope-Bender, ICM Secretary General, deplores the imminent threat of war: as well as the direct risk of injury or death to civilian populations, there is a huge long-term impact on the wellbeing of families, and projects such as the ICM's for women and Safe Motherhood are set back through lack of funding

A major conference in October last year, organised by the White Ribbon Alliance in New Delhi, brought together many agencies working for Safe Motherhood who recognised the unique contribution of midwives to this objective. ICM's Judi Brown presnted a paper 'Midwives of the world: making it happen together'

A vivid description of life for childbearing women in Palestinian communities under military occupation. Here midwives are returning to traditional skills of attending home and community-based births, as women in labour cannot get to hospital during curfews. Midwife Mary McNabb analyses the need for evidence-based action.

The cosmopolitan surroundings of Hong Kong made the setting for a regional conference on nursing and midwifery regulation involving participants from western Pacific and south-east Asia. ICM Deputy Director Judi Brown ran a workshop and continued to boost the specifically midwifery components of regulation development

Reproduced in full is a joint statement from midwives, nurses, doctors, dentists and physiotherapists entitled 'Civilians Pay in War'. The world confederations of all these health professionals have spoken as one voice in calling for non-violent resolution of conflict
