GLOBAL STRATEGY 1999 - 2002


GOAL 1: To work towards achievement of the Safe-Motherhood goals.

GOAL 2: To demonstrate the potential of midwifery actions to reduce maternal and perinatal mortality and morbidity rates.

GOAL 3: To extend the knowledge of midwifery and influence of midwives throughout the world in venues where decision-making takes place and policies made about the delivery of maternity care.

GOAL 4: To work with communities and women’s groups to develop their knowledge and awareness of how to attain health.

GOAL 5: To strengthen midwifery education and ongoing education programmes, including the role of the midwife as an educator.

GOAL 6: To develop mechanisms to support midwives so they can fully practice their skills.

GOAL 7: To encourage and support midwifery research and the pursuit of quality in the care of women in the reproductive years.

GOAL 8: To classify and define midwifery activities.

GOAL 9: To secure the financial viability of ICM.

GOAL 10: To increase the number of associations of midwives in membership in countries where no member associations exist at present.

GOAL 11: To disseminate information and provide forums by which member associations and their membership can share and develop from the experience of others.

GOAL 12: The development of national codes of ethics based on the International Code of Ethics for Midwives.
